Keep customer updates from restarting ActiveCampaign emails
A contact sync can update customer records while automations respond to field changes, tags, or subscriptions. Check matching, triggers, and consent before turning on an integration.
Connecting ActiveCampaign to a CRM, scheduling tool, or ecommerce platform can keep customer records current. It can also affect automations if the integration changes a field, adds a tag, or subscribes someone to a list. Before turning on a sync, check which contact it will update, which actions it will take, and which automation triggers will respond.
What to take away
- Updating an existing contact will not fire a Contact is created trigger, but a changed field can start an automation configured for that field.
- A tag must be removed and added again to restart a Tag is added trigger. Changing an unsubscribed list membership to active resubscribes the contact.
- Check the integration's actual requests, match the right contact, and test opt-outs and repeat-entry settings before launch.
A process to check before connecting a sync
Map writes to triggers
Record which fields, tags, and list memberships the integration changes. Compare them with each automation's start triggers.
Pick a matching identifier
Use an identifier both systems hold reliably. Check the endpoint's lookup order before relying on email or phone.
Keep enrollment actions deliberate
Apply tags and subscribe contacts only from an authorized step in your process. Preserve an existing opt-out.
Test four contact types
Run a new contact, an existing contact with a changed field, an unsubscribed contact, and an already enrolled contact through the integration.
Start with a small group
Watch contact changes and automation entries before syncing your full list.
This is our recommended process. A third-party connector may use different API calls, so inspect its actual behavior before relying on these endpoint rules.
Check what a contact update can start
ActiveCampaign's contact sync endpoint looks for an existing contact and updates it, or creates one if none matches. This distinction matters because the Contact is created automation trigger runs for a new record, not an update to an existing one.
An update can still start another automation. The Contact field changes trigger runs when a field you specify changes to or from values set in that trigger. A welcome sequence built on that trigger needs different checks from one built on Contact is created.
List the actual writes your integration makes and compare each one with your automations' start triggers. A CRM connector may use a different endpoint from the contact sync endpoint described here.

Match the right contact before you write
The contact sync endpoint checks contact ID only when requested, then a WhatsApp ID when enabled, then email, and finally phone when no email was sent. An email that finds no match does not fall back to phone.
If an integration sends a different email for an existing customer, the endpoint may create a new record. That new record can meet a Contact is created trigger even though the person is already your customer.
Choose an identifier both systems share reliably, usually email, and test how changed or missing identifiers are handled before syncing the full list.

Test four kinds of contacts before launch
Use separate test records for a new contact, an existing contact whose field changes, an unsubscribed contact, and someone who already entered the automation. Confirm both the contact record and the automation history after each request.
For the unsubscribed record, confirm the integration leaves list status alone unless you have a valid reason and permission to change it. For an existing record, check whether a field-change trigger starts. For a new record, check Contact is created and any list or tag action.
Check whether each trigger is set to Runs once or Runs multiple times. ActiveCampaign says a repeated tag entry requires the tag to be removed and added again, while a list subscription can cause re-entry after an unsubscribe and resubscribe. Test the actual connector and automation together.

Keep this handy
Your pre-project checklist
- Which API calls and fields does the integration actually use?
- Which identifier matches the same person in both systems?
- Which automations start on contact creation, field changes, tags, or list subscriptions?
- Does an existing opt-out remain unchanged after a routine sync?
- Have you tested a new contact, a changed existing contact, an unsubscribed contact, and someone already in the automation?
- Does each trigger's Runs once or Runs multiple times setting match the intended entry rule?
